Ilya Segalovich was the co-founder of Russia’s Yandex; a search engine similar to Google, the name is derived from “Yet ANother inDEXer” (Russian Life). Ilya founded Yandex with his partner and friend Arkady Volozh in 1997, the company would become one of Russia’s largest internet companies valued at $10million and holds more than double Google’s share in the country’s market (BBC).
Ilya was more than an entrepreneur he was also a philanthropist and a political activist, unlike many other successful businessmen in Russia he was commonly seen at political protests and made his views known (Russian Life). Ilya also organized a charity Maria’s Children; run by his wife Maria Yeliseyeva , the charity focuses on helping Russian orphans by providing educational and artistic support (Russian Life). Unfortunately Ilya passed away on July 27th, 2013 due to brain cancer leaving behind a legacy for others to follow (BBC).
